What is thatch? And how do I know if I have too much?
Think of your lawn like a bed for your grass, and just like a bed has a blanket, your lawn has a layer called thatch. Thatch is made up of dead grass, roots, and organic material. A thin layer is normal and even helpful, keeping the soil insulated and protected. But too much thatch can be a problem. When it gets too thick, it blocks water, air, and nutrients from reaching the roots, which can lead to an unhealthy, stressed-out lawn.

Here’s how to spot it:
Touch Test: If the grass feels super spongy, like a trampoline, you might have excess thatch.

Visual Check: Pull the grass apart and look at the soil. A dense, brown layer thicker than your pinky? Too much.

Water Trouble: If water pools on top instead of soaking in, thick thatch may be the culprit.
